PARLOR23:
NBA ALL STAR WEEKEND –
SELF-BELIEF WORKSHOP
During NBA All Star Weekend, Jordan Women’s Collective hosted a self-belief workshop with young black girls from the nonprofit organization, Curly Me! at PARLOR23, a pizza parlor-themed installation created by @jumpman23 as a nod to Michael Jordan's "Flu Game" performance in Game 5 of the '97 NBA finals.
We spoke to the young girls about what affirmations are, what we love about ourselves, and the importance of creating positive affirmations to help guide us on our journey. I was inspired by the girls in my group and how they worked together to uplift each other during this activity. The first affirmation they created was: "I can do things men can do." Not long after, they asked if they could change their original affirmation to: "I can do things men CAN and CAN'T do." Watching the girls' confidence grow in such a short amount of time was incredible. Their final affirmation was: "My melanin is beautiful." This workshop was a great opportunity to empower and encourage our young girls to be their best selves. We were there to inspire them, but they ultimately inspired us.
